I'm a fan of Jerry Bruckheimer's Pirates of the Caribbean series. I really enjoyed the first film because it reminded me of all the years I spent taking my family to Disney World and enjoying the ride of the same name. Seeing Johnny Depp as a flaming gay pirate, Jake Sparrow, was totally unexpected and made the film that much more interesting. However, once that played out it became a bore in subsequent films. In fact, the last film was so long (2 hours, 21 minutes) I actually felt myself falling asleep during the fight sequences.  After all, how many sword fights can you have between the living and the dead?

Now comes the 5th Pirate movie from this franchise and I must confess it's much better than I expected for several reasons.

First the movie was the right length (2 hours) and it didn't drag on forever.  Which is what usually happens when you think it's over and they have another fight scene and you think it's over and another fight scene and so on and so on.

Second The movie did not center around Johnny Depp.  It was more involved in the other characters and Johnny Depp played a small role. Javier Bardem (I must admit I'm a big fan) put in a great performance as Captain Salazar and his quest to destroy Jack Sparrow.

What I really enjoyed about this movie was the story and the unique action sequences other than the standard constant sword fighting between ghosts and Pirates.  This film kept my attention with exciting and imaginative chase scenes. I was truly surprised and thoroughly enjoyed the film. Unfortunately, I did not get the screen it in 3-D so I may have to see it again because the action scenes were spectacular. I would assume, based upon the spectacular action sequences that seeing this film on the big screen in 3-D would probably be recommended.
